sofar... FAQ

This isn't really a FAQ so much as it's a place for me to dump all of the tidbits about this project because clogging up the top of the main page looks bad.

Q: What is the point of having a giant list of albums that rarely have anything to do with each other?

A: I don't know! I guess the best use of this would be if you are looking for rock albums you can ctrl+f and search for rock albums. You could also do the same for more specific genres like Dream Pop, Math Rock, etc. but yes this idea as a whole is really dumb and takes away the (tiny) bit of context essential charts have in the first place.

Q: Why are genres like "Experimental Rock" and "Abstract Hip-Hop" used? They don't describe what the actual music sounds like!

A: I would rather list a lyrically driven genre that is representative of the whole album rather than; for example, describing 3 Feet High and Rising as "Jazz Rap" of which only about 50% is jazz rap. I'll tag it as conscious hip-hop as I think that is more integral to the identity of the album as a whole. Besides, arguing about genres is a job for RYM nerds anyways.

Q: Why is "World" used as a genre?

A: I would just like to keep the format of [Meta Genre] / [Sub-Genre]. For albums like Getz / Gilberto, I could have easily just wrote Bossa Nova as the genre and left it at that but it breaks the flow of the rest of the page. Bossa Nova also didn't specifically grow out of a genre, it was just the regional sound of Brazil. This is also why Ambient albums have Experimental as the meta-genre (although I give more credence to this since ambient music is in the grand scheme of music experimental).

Q: What do the asterisks next to some entries mean?

A: The astericks are just entries that have a special note about them, these notes can be found on the "Notes" subpage. Translation into English characters for foreign albums are there as well.

Q: What charts are / will be included in this project? Just the ones from /mu/?

A: Generally on the internet when someone mentions an "essentials" chart they are referring to those that originate from 4chan. Seeing as how boards like /mu/, /v/ and /tv/ are steadily becoming shit I will include charts that originate from other areas of the internet. After all, no one is really an "authority" over recommendations for art let alone one anon from a chan board.

Q: What constitutes a chart being included in this project?

A: There are some factors that I look out for though as I'm not going to compile any topsters chart I see on the internet. Here they are:

The following are the entries on the list with asterisks next to them.
